By using power data-logging equipment, climate consultancies, are able to capture energy consumption data for each separate stage of the diamond manufacturing process. This energy consumption data, when combined with Sarine’s meticulous tracking of each diamond throughout its various stages, as well as the recorded details regarding the diamond’s size, the number of diamonds cut from each rough diamond, and other relevant parameters, enables the derivation of precise and individualized energy consumption data for each diamond. This pioneering information will inform carbon and energy management decisions for diamond manufacturers who join the pursuit of measuring their manufacturing impact in order to disclose it, and then reduce it.
This data represents the energy consumption required to process a rough diamond, taking into account the size of the rough stone and the shape of the polished diamond. It encompasses the electricity consumption involved in the direct cutting and polishing activities, along with the ancillary electricity and energy consumed at the Windhoek diamond cutting and polishing facility, based on annual energy consumption for the year 2022. The amount of electricity used in the direct cutting and polishing process was based on power metering measurements taken during a two-day energy audit at the Windhoek facility.
